mother’s sunday

mothers

sure, flowers are just so cliché, but i love them so. i bought these for the house for a study in tulips as well as motivation to tidy up weeks of mess and clutter in time for when our families, who popped around for mother’s day breakfast; champagne included.

mother’s day breakfast menu

mushroom and bacon mini quiches
fruit platter of rockmelon, grapes, dried apricots and almonds
creamy scrambled eggs
italian pork sausages and crispy bacon
mushrooms cooked in butter and chives and roasted tomatoes
homemade gravlax and dill mayonnaise
damper and rye bread
mini apple and cinnamon muffins
apple clafoutis

and so, sunday morning was spent preparing breakfast and then we ate our way through the day with a toast for our mothers. at about two in the afternoon, it was time to visit my grandmother who was in the midst of her own banquet. before we could muster a feeble reply to say we were just too full to eat again there were dishes of fragrant curries, with sticks of cinnamon and lemon grass between tender pieces of lamb, green beans cooked in a turmeric and paprika infused coconut broth, and potatoes so soft they fell apart with each forkful.

there were sweets too; nana’s famous butter cake cut straight from the pan and cubes of milk toffee, a fudge if you will of milk, cardamom and cashews, set just so and cut up into pieces and left in a hefty jar for eager fingers. it’s a sugar high you have never known and is always good with a nice cup of tea and a sit down while flicking through the family albums and hearing stories of yesteryear.
